Cat walking behind a litter box filled with naturally fresh walnut litter

Transitioning your cat kid to Naturally Fresh

If you’ve ever introduced a cat to a new litter, you know it takes time and patience. It’s also sometimes a necessity, especially if your cat kid is experiencing litter box acceptance issues or allergies from dusty clay litter. Luckily, Naturally Fresh shows high cat acceptance, allowing kittens and cat kids to acclimate quickly to our all-natural walnut shell litter formulas. Read on for some Naturally Fresh litter training tips as well as reasons why cat kids often adjust faster to our litter than the competition.

Cat litter training tips

Wondering how to get your cat to use the litter box? Cats instinctively bury their business in nature to hide their scent from predators, so using a litter box often comes naturally. And because Naturally Fresh is made from walnut shells, it speaks more to their DNA than clay litter, making it an easier cat litter transition.

If you’re bringing a new cat kid home or training your kitten to use the litter box, make sure you:

  • Have one litter box for each cat, plus one extra.
  • Set up the litter box (or multi-cat litter boxes) away from noisy areas.
  • Show them the litter box right away so they know where to go.
  • Choose a litter box that’s the right size for your cat kid.
  • Use 3 inches of Naturally Fresh cat litter, scooping regularly and replacing litter to maintain freshness.

Love This Litter!
by Patricia | June 2025 | chewy.com
This litter is really great. I wanted a natural type that looked like dirt for two young feral cats. Worked better than expected. I am pleased with this litter as it controls odor and has very little dust. The litter fit the bill as both cats used it from day one.

Cats took to it quickly
by Stacey | June 2025 | chewy.com
I have 4 cats and currently use a clay litter. I kept one litter box with just the clay litter and gradually introduced this litter in with the clay litter to the other boxes to get them used to it. The other boxes are now at 90% walnut and 10% clay. The cats are using the litter. I like that there is no dust and it absorbs well.

How to transition to Naturally Fresh gradually

Making the transition from clay to walnut shell litter? Switching from corn litter, wheat litter, paper litter, pine pellet litter, or tofu litter? No matter which type of cat litter you’re replacing, it’s important to make the switch gradually – otherwise, your cat kids could be startled by the change and avoid the litter box.

  • Place 1–2 inches of Naturally Fresh in a clean litter box.
  • Top it off with your current litter so it covers the new litter.
  • Each time you change the litter, reduce the amount of your current litter while increasing the amount of Naturally Fresh.

Why cat kids love our eco-friendly litter

Since walnut shells organically eliminate odor better than clay and the other natural litters, cat litter boxes smell fresher, keeping cats coming back.

This stuff is amazing. It doesn’t smell, doesn’t leave dust all over the environment, the cats accept it right away, it’s compostable – what’s not to like!

Our non-toxic litter is free of harmful silica dust, which lets your cat kid breathe easy.

Sneezing stopped
by Denise | June 2025 | chewy.com
For years I have used the clay litter but one of my cats was having nasal issues. The clay litter has a lot of dust. I switched over to the crushed walnut shells and now my cat can breathe again. So glad I solved the problem.

Our clumping and non-clumping walnut shell litter formulas are all soft on paws, even for those with sensitive feet.

Great Litter
by Chelsea | June 2025 | chewy.com
I have five cats and they all actually agree on this litter. The material doesn’t seem too hard on my cats’ feet and even my completely declawed rescue (she came to me that way) tolerates it well on her sensitive little feet.
